Women in Aviation, Marine and Transport (WIAM&T) has announced Malta Public Transport as its first corporate partner in the transport sector, marking a milestone following the organisation’s recent expansion beyond aviation.
The partnership forms part of WIAM&T’s broader strategy to attract more women and girls into careers across aviation, marine and transport, while also addressing ongoing skills shortages within these industries.
Rachel Galea, Operations Director at Malta Public Transport, said the collaboration reflects a shared focus on widening participation within the sector.
“Empowering women in our sector is essential to driving innovation, strengthening resilience, and ensuring long-term success,” she added.
Founded six years ago, WIAM&T (Women in Aviation, Marine and Transport) operated on a voluntary basis for its first four years before incorporating as a private limited company in late 2024. The move has enabled founder Ruth Sawers to focus full-time on developing the organisation’s programmes and partnerships.
Since incorporating, WIAM&T has expanded its activities across education, outreach and industry engagement. Initiatives include a mentorship programme covering students across aviation, marine and transport disciplines under an agreement with Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, as well as ongoing outreach with young people and parents on career pathways.
The organisation has also hosted regular networking events with corporate partners, launched an annual awards programme recognising contributions within the sector, and introduced a cross-industry careers fair. It is also preparing to host its inaugural ‘Women on the MOVE’ conference in Malta, which is expected to feature a majority of female speakers from both local and international backgrounds.
Commenting on the partnership, Ms Sawers described it as a key step in strengthening industry collaboration.
“Welcoming our first transport corporate partner since expanding into marine and transport is a proud moment for WIAM&T. Strong industry partnerships are vital to creating clear pathways for women and girls into these sectors. Together with our corporate partners, members, mentors and students, we are building a more diverse, skilled workforce for the future,” she said.
WIAM&T indicated that further corporate partnerships and programme developments are expected to be announced as it continues to expand its activities across the three sectors.
