A new contemporary art space, axis_, is opening in Malta this April in Butler's House Attard.

The gallery is built on a dual structure, combining operational management with artistic direction. This approach is designed to support both long-term development and a clear artistic programme.

Co-founder Maria McKenna said the project responds to changing ideas around heritage in Malta. “The future of heritage lies in how we inhabit it, not simply how we preserve it,” she said, noting that the focus is shifting towards how spaces can be actively used within contemporary cultural life.

The team behind axis_ includes Mario Cassar, Maria McKenna and Marie Cassar, who lead the gallery’s management, and Elyse Tonna, who serves as founding artistic director. Ms Tonna is responsible for shaping the gallery’s artistic vision and programme.

Beyond exhibitions, axis_ "aims to build connections across the Mediterranean and Europe", working with artists, curators and institutions in related contexts. The gallery is positioned as part of a wider network, rather than a standalone space.

axis_ is located in The Butler’s House, next to Villa Bologna in Attard. The building, which historically served a supporting role, has been adapted into a contemporary exhibition space.

Marie Cassar, architect and co-founder, said the aim was to retain the building’s character while introducing a structure that supports exhibitions and public engagement. The space is designed to allow the artworks and ideas to take focus.

The name axis_ reflects the gallery’s approach. It suggests connection and alignment, while the underscore points to an open and ongoing process. The gallery is conceived as a space where artistic practices are placed in relation to wider social and political contexts.

Ms Tonna said the programme will focus on artists whose work responds to contemporary conditions, including themes such as migration, ecology, labour and identity. The aim is to present work that is both relevant and critically engaged.

axis_ will open with Nothing is Clear, a collective exhibition curated by Elyse Tonna. The show, which is a satellite event of Malta Biennale 2026, opens on 10th April and runs until 29th May.
