Graziella Castillo, Director of Agenzija Appoġġ, has passed away at the age of 47, the agency announced in a statement expressing “profound sorrow” at her loss.

Ms Castillo had joined the social services organisation in 2000, after she obtained her Bachelor's in Social Work. She was later appointed as Director 5 years ago. According to the organisation's website, she is currently reading for a Masters Degree in Youth and Community Studies.

Her passing has been described as a significant loss for her family, colleagues, and the many individuals she supported throughout her career in the social welfare sector.

In its tribute, the agency said Ms Castillo was “more than a leader”, highlighting her role as a source of strength, compassion, and humanity in a field that requires all three. It noted that she was guided by a strong belief that every individual deserves to be heard, supported, and treated with dignity.

The statement also emphasised her commitment to recognising the human stories behind her work, particularly those of vulnerable individuals, and her efforts to ensure they received the support they needed.

Colleagues and members of the social work community have paid tribute to Ms Castillo, recalling her as a mentor, leader, and friend.

One colleague described her as “someone who believed in me” and “made me always feel that I belong,” while another highlighted her “compassion, integrity and strength” in both her professional and personal interactions.

Others reflected on her early years and professional development, noting her journey from student to leader and her continued dedication to supporting and guiding others, particularly those entering the profession.

Ms Castillo is remembered for her contribution to the sector and the impact she had on the lives of those she worked with and supported.

When she’s not writing articles at work or poetry at home, you’ll find her taking long walks in the countryside, pumping iron at the gym, caring for her farm animals, or spending quality time with family and friends. In short, she’s always on the go, drawing inspiration from the little things around her, and constantly striving to make the ordinary extraordinary.
