Looking back at 2025, and Hi-Care Services' continued expansion across outsourcing, healthcare, cleaning, turnkey & maintenance, and construction, Turnkey Team Lead Daniel Attard Portughes finds it hard to pinpoint one memorable moment. There were simply too many notable occasions for him and his construction and maintenance team.
“Whenever we finish a really big job, where we transform a property while still maintaining its character, you can look at the job and feel really proud of yourself,” he says.
“Take a traditional, old balcony, for example: if you remember what it looked like before and compare that to what it looks like now with its woodwork and paint restored, every project becomes a highlight.”
Over his two years with Hi-Care Services, Daniel Attard Portughes’ role has changed from being mostly hands-on to coordination. “When I joined the company, I was looking after a range of different aspects of maintenance, from leaks and breakages to restoration,” Mr Attard Portughes explains. Today, he is more likely to be the person to answer an initial customer enquiry and then visit the site to get a better idea of what is required.
As Hi-Care Services’ turnkey and maintenance team has grown to around 20 workers, the rest of the company expanded too. Hi-Care Services now has dedicated departments looking after customers needing cleaning services, healthcare expertise, or outsourcing support. While employees in the early days may have been part of more than one team, most have now specialised in their area.
At the same time, the company’s customer base has expanded. “Initially, most of our customers were private individuals. As our reputation grew, private sector companies started hiring us, and eventually, Hi-Care Services also broadened into the public sector.”
Mr Attard Portughes believes the high level of customer service is one of the main drivers behind the company’s expansion: “Even if we’re unable to help a client, we’ll go the extra mile to find and recommend someone who can.”
Another major factor in Hi-Care Services’ success story is the company’s founder, Aleksander. Watching him grow each area of the business has been inspirational for Daniel Attard Portughes.
“Watching Aleks grow the business gave me the energy to come up with new ideas and put them forward. When we think an idea has the potential to succeed, Aleks may step in, but he will always make sure the person who suggested it is part of the development.”
Similarly, team members are free to look after their area of the business, but the door is always open when someone needs a helping hand.
For 2026, Mr Attard Portughes has an idea that combines his passion for theatre and television with his role at Hi-Care: “I would love to get the company involved in a TV programme that revolves around restoration. Whether it is a whole building or a single item, there’s always a story in taking something that’s perhaps been neglected and bringing it back to life. I love seeing that, and I believe others do, too.”
Heading up the turnkey and maintenance team provides ample opportunity to witness these transformations, especially as this area and the construction services of Hi-Care’s business has expanded significantly in 2025 and looks set for further growth in 2026.

“Someone may start as a helper and then gradually become qualified at a higher level. Plus, by working as a team and having a colleague looking at a job, you get a fresh pair of eyes which can make all the difference.”

“When you develop a reputation as a good company to work for, you start attracting the right people,” Mr Attard Portughes says. He points out that word of mouth recommendations are powerful both in building an organisation’s client base and its workforce.
“Personal referrals and social media advertising have been very effective in helping us grow, but of course, it’s the service delivery that needs to speak for itself every time.” Making a lasting impression starts at the first meeting.
Whenever Mr Attard Portughes and the team visit a potential new client, they look beyond the job at hand. “Offering a wider range of services is often about saving our clients time and money. Imagine you ask us to transform a bathroom in your property. While we’re there, we see that another area would benefit from a coat of paint. We’ll point that out to you, because combining the two jobs will be more efficient.”
Understanding customer needs and exceeding customer expectations is the core of Hi-Care’s 2026 growth strategy. With an approach that’s both employee- and customer-centric, the team is well-placed to continue expanding its reputation as the go-to service provider in Malta.
