Virtu Ferries has announced the acquisition of a 24,000-square-metre site overlooking the Port of Pozzallo from the Regione Siciliana, in what is being described as a significant investment in regional logistics infrastructure.
The €6 million project will see the development of the Virtu Ferries Logistics Hub, a facility set to play a central role in streamlining trade between Malta and Sicily. Once operational, the hub will serve as a state-of-the-art base for logistics companies and distributors engaged in import and export activities between the two countries.
The development plans include a modern business centre, dedicated office space, trailer parking, warehousing and storage facilities, and accommodation for commercial vehicle drivers. Parking for light vehicles will also be available.
The hub is expected to enhance Virtu Ferries’ existing fast track cargo service, supporting quicker and more efficient cross-border trade.
“This initiative represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen Virtu Ferries’ leadership on the Sicily-Malta maritime route,” said a company spokesperson. “We are proud to contribute to the development of regional infrastructure and provide innovative logistics solutions to our partners.”
Virtu Ferries expressed gratitude to the Regione Siciliana and the Assessorato Regionale del Territorio e dell’Ambiente for their cooperation and support in enabling the project.
“It is extremely encouraging to see the Italian authorities believe in our high-speed catamaran service and recognise the investments and hard work we have dedicated to the Sicily-Malta route,” the spokesperson added.
