As the Nationalist Party continues to deliberate over which parliamentary seat leader Alex Borg should relinquish following last week's general election, many Gozitans appear far less concerned about the issue.
A visit to Gozo by WhosWho.mt found that the overwhelming majority of residents interviewed believe Dr Borg will continue to represent the island's interests regardless of which district he ultimately chooses to retain.
Among roughly 30 Gozitans spoken to, a common sentiment emerged: Alex Borg's connection to Gozo goes beyond electoral boundaries.
"It doesn't really make a difference for me if he chooses us or not," one resident said. "He still has Gozo in his heart, so whichever district has him, he will still represent us."
The view was echoed repeatedly throughout the day, suggesting that concerns within the PN about potentially disappointing Gozitan voters may not be widely shared among the electorate itself.
Younger Gozitans less aware of the debate
An interesting generational divide also emerged during conversations with residents.
Many younger people interviewed were largely unaware of the ongoing debate surrounding Dr Borg's dual-district election and the statutory questions facing the party. In several cases, the situation had to be explained before they could offer an opinion.
Older residents, meanwhile, generally demonstrated a stronger awareness of the issue and the possible implications of Dr Borg's decision.
Despite this, one younger Gozitan argued that there would be benefits if Dr Borg retained his Gozo seat.
She pointed specifically to Dr Borg's hometown of Munxar, suggesting that his presence as the elected representative for the district could help ensure greater attention is given to local concerns.
"If he chooses Gozo, he can take care of it better, especially Munxar," she said.
The discussion follows growing debate within the PN over how Dr Borg should navigate a statutory ambiguity after being elected from both the 12th and 13th electoral districts in last week's election.
According to reports, the party is considering several possible routes forward, including seeking a legal interpretation of its statute, amending the party's rules, or having Dr Borg voluntarily relinquish one of the two seats.
