Hybrid IT and digital infrastructure underpin BMIT’s work with businesses. In this interview, BMIT CEO Christian Sammut delves into this pillar as it becomes a growing part the company’s journey and explore why it matters now.

What is digital infrastructure and why does BMIT lead in this space?

Christian Sammut: Digital infrastructure is the backbone of the modern economy. It includes systems, such as data centres, cloud platforms, connectivity networks, and mobile towers, that enable the storage, processing, and movement of data. These systems are essential for businesses to operate efficiently and compete globally.

BMIT has been at the forefront of Malta's digital infrastructure evolution for over two decades. With state-of-the-art data centres, locally hosted cloud platforms and recent strategic investments in mobile tower infrastructure and digital assets services, we set the standard for reliability, security, and innovation.

But here's why this matters so deeply: Malta's economic future depends on world-class digital infrastructure that lets businesses compete globally while remaining rooted locally. It's not just a technical necessity but a strategic asset for Malta's future and a responsibility which we take very seriously.

How does this philosophy shape BMIT’s team and culture?

Christian Sammut: Technology only performs when people do. Our purpose is to create an environment where technical excellence and human potential amplify each other. We live that through our values: dependability, a growth mindset, excellence, and a can-do attitude. We invest in our people, encourage innovation at every level, and support each other to deliver for our customers.

BMIT’s investment in Malta Properties Company (MPC) was strongly approved by shareholders. How does this fit into your broader Digital Infrastructure strategy?

Christian Sammut: When we invest in digital infrastructure, we are building the foundation for other businesses to think bigger and go further. The MPC investment is a key milestone in our long-term plan to be such an enabler. It is part of a deliberate direction to position BMIT as a central player in Malta’s digital transformation. It complements our services business with long-term, stable income from critical assets, while reinforcing a wider digital ambition.

You also moved into passive mobile infrastructure: the masts and towers that underpin mobile connectivity. For readers less familiar with this area, what exactly did BMIT acquire and why is it important?

Christian Sammut: Passive mobile infrastructure refers to the physical masts and towers that mobile operators use to deliver nationwide coverage. These structures support antennas and equipment but don’t include the active electronics or spectrum.

BMIT acquired the infrastructure that powers GO’s mobile network, and our offering ensures reliable, high-quality sites for their mobile networks. This expands our portfolio and makes BMIT a key enabler of national connectivity, while providing stable, long-term income.

How do your infrastructure assets and your Hybrid IT services come together for enterprise customers?

Christian Sammut: They meet in outcomes that matter most: performance, security, and availability. By aligning infrastructure with cloud and managed services, we deliver end-to-end assurances and help our clients, and the wider business ecosystem to operate better. As organisations adopt data-intensive, low-latency workloads and embed AI in operations, that alignment makes results more predictable and impactful.

Some observers worry that infrastructure exposure could distract from day-to-day service delivery. How do you keep balance?

Christian Sammut: Both areas complement each other. We focus on investments that strengthen customer experience and shareholder value, with specialised teams and a clear emphasis on service quality.  The goal is not to do ‘more things’ but do the right things that reinforce each other.

What drives you personally in leading Malta’s digital transformation?

Christian Sammut: Technology should amplify human potential, not replace it. Seeing how the right infrastructure helps Maltese businesses grow and compete globally motivates me every day.

And the message to the investment communuty following the EGM and company announcement?

Christian Sammut: We are executing a plan that couples reliable, long-term income with the capabilities enterprises are asking for. The MPC approval shows we can enhance Malta’s infrastructure while keeping our financial profile strong and create value for our employees and our shareholders.

Final question – what’s the most ambitious version of BMIT you’re working toward?

Christian Sammut: A company that helps set the pace for the region while staying true to our purpose of amplifying Malta’s potential. We aim to be Malta’s reference point for digital infrastructure and enterprise technology, and to help shape what Malta can become. That’s the horizon we are building towards, decisively, and with the same consistency that’s brought us here. Ultimately, our success is measured not only by what we achieve as a company, but by what we enable our businesses to do.
