The staff at Valletta restaurant Beati Paoli were left pleasantly surprised after receiving a €1,200 tip from a customer, a gesture that one of the restaurant’s chefs described as deeply appreciated by the entire team.

The tip was shared on social media by chef Mike, who posted a photo of the receipt showing the generous amount left by a diner at the popular restaurant located on St Paul Street in Valletta.

In a message accompanying the post, Mike thanked the customer on behalf of the team.

“Your kindness and appreciation mean far more to us than words can adequately express,” he wrote.

“Gestures like yours inspire and motivate our entire team to continue providing the best possible experience to our guests.”

Data from 2025 had shown the challenges faced by the restaurant industry. A survey conducted by statistician Vincent Marmarà for the Association of Catering Establishments (ACE) found that diners in Maltese restaurants spent an average of €22.74 per meal during the second half of 2024, down from €25.89 in the first half of the year.

The study showed that spending varies considerably depending on the type of establishment. Fine dining restaurants reported an average spend of €51.36 per customer, while casual dining restaurants averaged €26.04. Cafeterias, snack bars and takeaway outlets recorded significantly lower figures.
