Professor Alfred J. Vella, the outgoing Rector of the University of Malta, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Split during a ceremony held in Croatia earlier this week.
The honour was conferred during a formal event at the Split City Museum on 15th June, with Professor Vella recognised for his contributions to higher education, scientific research and academic cooperation.
A distinguished environmental chemist, Professor Vella has led the University of Malta since 2016.
He was one of three academics to receive the honorary distinction this year. The other recipients were Piotr Stepnowski, Rector of the University of Gdansk, and Emilio Marin, Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and Epigraphy.
During the ceremony, University of Split Rector Dragan Ljutić formally conferred the doctorate upon Professor Vella, presenting him with the university's honorary diploma and ceremonial insignia.
The nomination was presented by Associate Professor Maja Krželj, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Science and Chair of the committee responsible for the award, who outlined Professor Vella's academic achievements and career.
Throughout his academic career, he has been widely recognised for his work in environmental chemistry, particularly in the areas of water quality, pollution monitoring and sustainable environmental management.
