Malta has been placed on high alert as Storm Harry swept across the islands, bringing winds of up to 100kmph, heavy rain, and widespread disruption to daily life and business operations.

Across several localities, businesses were forced to close their doors as safety concerns mounted and damage became evident. Klay Restaurant in St Julian’s announced its closure via Instagram, citing the severe weather conditions affecting the area.

Several other food outlets followed suit, including Big Boy Pizzeria & Take Away and Sphinx Pastizzeria Żejtun, both of which confirmed they would remain closed during the storm.

Meanwhile, Alma Restaurant was directly impacted after the storm ripped down part of its façade, highlighting the force of the winds battering coastal and urban areas.

Local café chain Panina issued a public message urging residents to stay indoors and follow official guidance, while thanking essential workers required to be out on the roads. As a gesture of appreciation, Panina offered free coffee and a croissant to essential workers operating near its outlets in Fgura, St Venera, Gżira, Naxxar, and Żebbuġ.

The company also warned customers that delivery services may be limited and slower than usual, as fewer couriers are operating due to safety concerns linked to strong winds and rough conditions.

Footage shared on social media by the Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government showed the extent of the damage caused by the storm. Broken shop façades, toppled railings and motorbikes, flooded streets, and marine litter washed ashore were visible across multiple localities.

Amongst all this, many private companies have instructed for their workers to work from home.

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) confirmed it has had a busy 24 hours, responding to 42 tree obstruction incidents linked to Storm Harry. These were reported in areas including Cospicua, San Ġwann, Naxxar, and Żebbuġ, with fallen trees blocking roads and posing risks to motorists and pedestrians.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to official advisories as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist.
