The Malta Business Registry (MBR) has announced that users seeking access to company information on its BAROS portal will soon be required to log in using an approved authentication method.
As of Friday (today), access to the Company Search function on BAROS will no longer be open to anonymous users. Instead, individuals must authenticate their identity using one of the following options: A Malta Government CORP Account, Malta e-ID, eIDAS, or a Non-EU Login.
The MBR stated that this change is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance data security and ensure responsible access to company information. Registration for access will remain free of charge.
The Malta Business Registry (MBR) clarified in July that while access to Beneficial Owner (BO) information remains restricted to those with a legitimate interest – such as journalists, NGOs, and certain professionals – shareholder information will continue to be publicly accessible.
This reassurance comes after concerns were raised that recent changes to the Companies Act and the BO register might limit visibility into shareholder data as well. The MBR confirmed that the new limitations apply solely to the BO register, following the implementation of EU anti-money laundering rules through Legal Notice 127 of 2025.
