Marco Micallef, a longtime close aide of Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg, has been approved as Malta’s next Ambassador to the United States.
Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee unanimously approved Mr Micallef for the key role, with his nomination receiving cross-party support.
He will therefore succeed Godfrey Xuereb, who has been serving in the role since 2023.
“I look forward to turning the trust placed in me into positive work for our country, as I serve Malta in this ambassadorial role,” Mr Micallef said after his parliamentary approval was confirmed.
PN MP Adrian Delia thanked Mr Micalled for his service to the country and said the Opposition is proud to have voted in favour of his appointment.
Mr Micallef currently works as an Advisor to Minister Borg, having previously served as his Chief of Staff for over four years, first at the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects and then at the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.
He played a key political and coordinating role during Malta’s tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (2023-2024) and Malta’s 2024 Chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
He previously served as the Minister's Private Secretary, and as Secretariat Coordinator when Dr Borg was Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds.
Prior to that, he spent three years in Brussels working at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union as Deputy Mertens.
