A small shop in southern Italy has captured the attention of Maltese social media users after  photographs revealed a sign written in perfect Maltese outside a traditional deli in Alberobello.

The shop, Trullo Antichi Sapori, is a salumeria located in the picturesque town known for its iconic trulli houses. The sign, written in near-perfect Maltese, reads: “Hawnhekk tinsabu fl-eqdem salumeria f’Alberobello. Issibu prodotti tipiċi tal-lokal magħmulin bl-idejn u li ma jeħtiġux friġġ. Intom milqugħin tagħtu titwila b’xejn.”

Translated, this reads: “Here you are at the oldest salumeria in Alberobello. You will find typical local products, handmade and not requiring refrigeration. You are welcome to browse free of charge.”

The image was captured and shared by Martin Bugelli, a veteran Maltese civil servant whose career has spanned roles within the Health Department, Education Ministry, Office of the President, and Office of the Prime Minister. He also served as Head of the European Commission Representation in Malta and later as Director General at the Ministry for Security and Home Affairs.

The post quickly gained traction online, with many users expressing admiration and reflection. Some remarked that the Maltese used on the sign appeared more polished than what is often seen locally, while others pointed to the broader cultural implication  that Maltese is sometimes overlooked at home in favour of English.

Others highlighted the commercial awareness behind the gesture, noting that the use of Maltese reflects the strong presence of Maltese tourists in Alberobello. Several users commented that the sign made them more inclined to visit or support the shop on their next trip.

Mr Bugelli said that according to the shop owner, the decision to install the sign was a direct response to the steady flow of Maltese customers. Describing them as “good clients”, the owner explained that the text was written with the help of a Maltese visitor who frequented the shop.
