A historic piece of Birkirkara’s cinematic past is set for a dramatic transformation. A planning application has been submitted to restore the now-dilapidated Prince Theatre and convert it into a modern gymnastics studio, complete with wellness and fitness facilities.

The crumbling façade of the old Prince Theatre

Tucked away in a narrow street just off Valley Road, the Prince Theatre was once a cultural beacon in the town during the golden era of cinema in the 20th century. It later served as a storage and prop workshop for a local band club before falling into disrepa

The building was listed for sale in June 2024 at an asking price of €850,000. At the time, an agent promoting the property shed light on the property’s ownership, saying that the sellers inherited the building, which had been leased for decades, and recently regained control over it.

“Now, they just hope that it goes to someone with the right vision,” he told WhosWho.mt.

Leanne Bartolo

The new plans are being submitted by Luxus Properties Ltd, spearheaded by fitness entrepreneur Leanne Bartolo.

Ms Bartolo is a prominent name in Malta’s fitness scene, being a two-time WFF European Bikini champion and the founder of Warehouse.mt, a functional fitness franchise with locations in Gżira and at the Campus Hub in Msida.

The proposed redevelopment promises to preserve and revive the historic structure. Plans submitted to the Planning Authority indicate that the theatre’s façade will be restored to its original height and design. Meanwhile, significant structural updates are on the horizon.

These include the excavation of a new basement level, which will house a lap pool, ice baths, two saunas, and supporting facilities such as changing rooms and bathrooms.

The ground floor is set to serve as the heart of the gymnastics studio, with 147.75 square metres dedicated to open workout space, alongside a reception area.

The first floor – formerly the theatre’s balcony level – will be expanded to include a 53-square metre cardio space. The original auditorium void will be retained, allowing unobstructed views of the workout area below.

A rooftop terrace is also in the works, complemented by an 81-square metre recording studio, adding a creative dimension to the wellness hub.

The project is still at an early stage in the planning process, with feedback from various regulatory entities pending.
