GO’s third international cable landed in Malta early on Tuesday morning.
“This historical landmark means that Malta is now connected to mainland Europe via Marseille and Africa through Egypt,” the company said in an announcement.
The €25 million LaValette Submarine Cable allows the company to completely bypass Italian mainland infrastructure, a first for Malta.
Up till now, Malta’s two submarine cables connected the island to Italy’s framework via the East coast. This third cable will see Malta’s West coast connected to international frameworks for the first time ever.
“Malta’s economy and social wellbeing depends on its connections to the rest of the world. Having connections outside Sicily ensures the country remains connected at all times, making your life BETTER. EVERY. DAY,” the company said in its Tuesday morning announcement.
The project has been ongoing for over 20 months, and was supported through the assistance of Government, particularly the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of Economy Ministry under Minister Silvio Schembri, the Malta Communications Authority, the Planning Authority, the Lands Department, Malta Enterprise, partners Karl Attard & Brothers, QPM Architects and PCCW – a leading company investing in global submarine infrastructure.
