Former Prime Minister and Nationalist Party leader Eddie Fenech Adami celebrates his 91st birthday today.

Widely regarded as the architect of Malta’s EU accession, Dr Fenech Adami played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s modern political and economic landscape.

Serving as Prime Minister from 1987 to 1996 and again from 1998 to 2004, he is credited with liberalising Malta’s economy, attracting foreign investment, and reinstating democracy after years of political turmoil. His leadership was instrumental in steering Malta towards EU membership, which became a reality in 2004, shortly before he assumed the role of President of Malta.

Among the first to congratulate him on this milestone was European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who has often acknowledged his contribution to Malta’s EU journey.

Dr Fenech Adami remains one of Malta’s most influential political figures, leaving a legacy on the nation’s governance and development.
