Malta Enterprise supported 22 new foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in 2023, according to figures presented in the EY Malta Attractiveness Survey published last month.

The 22 new FDI projects involves an average investment of €600,000, and will create an average of 12 jobs each.

The table shows figures dating back to 2007, showing the variable number of new projects supported by Malta’s economic development agency over the years.

The largest number of new FDI projects were approved in 2020, when Malta Enterprise supported 39 new ventures with an average investment of €2 million. On the other hand, although 2011 only saw nine new projects approved, these carried an average investment of €14.43 million, one of only two years that the average investment per FDI project topped €5 million. The other year was 2016, when a total of 11 new projects carried an average investment of €12.7 million.

However, new FDI projects only show one half of the picture. Malta Enterprise also supports companies looking to expand their operations in Malta.

In 2023, the agency supported 21 expansions, with an average investment of €1.1 million estimated to create an average of 26.5 new jobs each.

In total, Malta Enterprise supported 43 new FDI projects and expansions last year, with a combined average of €800,000 invested in each one.
