Momentum’s General Secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin, has been elected Deputy Secretary General of the European Democratic Party (EDP) during the party’s Congress in Bilbao, Spain.
His appointment strengthens Malta’s representation within a broader European political framework and places a new Maltese voice within the EDP’s senior leadership.
For Mr Camilleri Gambin, the role represents both a professional milestone and an opportunity to contribute directly to European-level policy shaping.
Speaking exclusively to WhosWho.mt, Mr Camilleri Gambin described the appointment as both energising and validating. “I feel incredibly energised. It is a great privilege to contribute directly to the European Democrats, and I’m excited about how this will help us refine our policies back in Malta. On a personal level, it feels like a strong validation of Momentum’s methodology. It confirms that our professional approach and hard work are recognised and valued at a European level,” he said.
He added that his relatively recent entry into European political structures was met with openness from colleagues, emphasising that trust was built quickly.
“Momentum joined the EDP in April, but we hit the ground running. Over the past few months I’ve worked very closely with General Secretary Sandro Gozi and the wider team; communications experts and fellow delegates. I believe they responded well to our proactive style and fresh ideas. Trust is built on work and I am very glad to be around the table with motivated European colleagues who share our vision.”
In his public remarks following the election, Mr Camilleri Gambin highlighted the need for Europe to actively shape the role technology plays in democratic life. He argued that policymaking must prioritise child safety online, protect fundamental rights, and ensure that innovation works for citizens and workers rather than the other way around.
EDP Secretary General Sandro Gozi welcomed the appointment, noting that both Mr Camilleri Gambin and Arnold Cassola bring strong pro-European credentials and a reform-oriented approach. He said their involvement contributes to strengthening the party’s presence in Malta and aligns with the EDP’s commitment to transparency, the rule of law and combating corruption across the Union.
With a background in software engineering and more than a decade leading the bespoke software firm Preeo Software, Mr Camilleri Gambin later co-founded Talexio, an HR and payroll platform aimed at improving organisational well-being. His experience in digital systems and innovation is expected to shape his input within the EDP, particularly on issues relating to technology governance and workers’ rights in an increasingly digital economy.
Momentum noted that the role offers an opportunity to provide Maltese perspectives more directly within European debate, ensuring that issues such as online safety and environmental protection are reflected in continental policy discussions.
