Maltese Association of Psychiatry (MAP) President Nigel Camilleri has been awarded a fellowship at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, MAP announced on Wednesday.

“Well done to our President Dr Camilleri who has always shown tenacity, dedication, and significant contribution towards psychiatry,” it said, before adding that the honour is “truly deserved”.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the professional medical body responsible for supporting psychiatrists over the course of their careers from training to retirement, as well as setting and raising the standards of psychiatry in the United Kingdom.

He is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Mount Carmel Hospital, a position he has served in for over seven years.

Dr Camilleri is also the Clinical Lead at Birkirkara-based mental health clinic TAASC.

Additionally, he is Associate Clinical Research at Newcastle University, currently working with the Paediatric Bipolar Disorder Team on several research projects in the field.

Dr Camilleri entered the psychiatry scene in 2006 after starting his psychiatric training at Mount Carmel Hospital. Afterwards, he moved to Newcastle in the United Kingdom to continue his training, where he was then awarded a Doctor of Medicine in Psychiatry for Hard to Reach Young People from Newcastle University. During that time, he served in a number of roles at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) for four years, including as Consultant Psychiatrist in an adolescent in-patient and adolescent forensic in-patient unit in Middlesbrough.

MAP is a non-profit voluntary organisation that seeks to set the standards and promotes the highest quality of psychiatric care for individuals suffering from mental health problems, as well as support to their carers.
