Maria Montebello has stepped down from her role as St Aloysius College Rector, just a few months after becoming the first woman to hold the position.

Her resignation was communicated to parents and guardians via a circular signed by Dr Montebello and Fr Michael Bugeja, Chairperson of the Board. The circular stated that Dr Montebello has tendered her resignation and expressed gratitude for the community’s support.

“Dr Montebello thanks all parents and guardians for their support. The College thanks Dr Maria Montebello for her services and wishes her well for the future,” the circular read.

Dr Montebello was announced as Rector in May and officially assumed the role on 1st September. Her resignation in December brings her tenure to just over three months.

A respected educator, Dr Montebello was shortlisted in November for both National Worker of the Year 2025 and Head of the Year, reflecting the recognition she had built within the sector.

No further details were provided regarding the reason for her resignation, and the Board has not yet announced plans for an interim or permanent replacement.

When she’s not writing articles at work or poetry at home, you’ll find her taking long walks in the countryside, pumping iron at the gym, caring for her farm animals, or spending quality time with family and friends. In short, she’s always on the go, drawing inspiration from the little things around her, and constantly striving to make the ordinary extraordinary.
