St Aloysius College has officially announced the appointment of Dr Maria Montebello as its new Rector, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to assume the role.
The announcement was made in a letter issued by the Chairperson of the College.
Dr Montebello currently serves as Head of School at St Ignatius College, Prof. Edward de Bono Ħandaq Middle School, a position she has held since 2012.
Her career in education spans various leadership roles, including Head of School at St Benedict College, Safi Primary, and Assistant Head at St Benedict College, Għaxaq Primary.
In a Facebook statement, the College highlighted Dr Montebello’s extensive experience, noting that her "long years in leadership have provided Dr Montebello with first hand expertise in school development, policy implementation, inclusive practices, cultural adaptation and strategic leadership.”
Dr Montebello will succeed Fr Jimmy Bartolo, who has served as Rector for the past 12 years.
The College expressed its gratitude for Fr Bartolo’s dedication and leadership, and extended its best wishes as he embarks on a new mission as Secretary for Education of the Society of Jesus.
Dr Montebello is set to begin her tenure as Rector on 1st September 2025.
