SR Technics Malta Ltd has changed its name to easyJet Engineering Malta after the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) service provider was acquired by major budget airline easyJet.

The acquisition, first announced in April, was given the green light by the Officer for Competition within the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) last May.

The MCCAA had stated that there is no horizontal overlap between the two firms, given they “operate at different levels of the supply chain.” Additionally, it also pointed to then SR Technics’ “limited market share” and the “widespread availability of alternative MRO service providers within the European Economic Area (EEA).”

The move was accomplished through a share sale and purchase agreement.

The name change was announced in an email sent to clients on Monday, stating that it comes after SR Technics became part of the easyJet family.

As a result of the move, there has also been a change to the company’s registered office to read: easyJet Engineering Malta Ltd, MIA017, Hal-Farrug Road, Hal-Farrug, Luqa, LQA3079, Malta.

It also stated that all company email addresses have had their domain name changed to the following: [name]@engineering.easyjet.com.

SR Technics was initially set up as the technical department of the former Swiss Air, but was established as a separate company in 1997. The Zurich-based company established a base in Malta in 2010, with easyJet being its launch customer. The first aircraft to emerge from its hangars – an easyJet Airbus 319 – was even christened the ‘Pride of Malta.’

The two companies have had a long-standing partnership over the years, and in October 2023, SR Technics Malta announced a new three-year contract with the airline.

easyJet is Europe’s sixth-largest airline by passenger numbers, and the second-largest budget carrier. It uses a fleet of 343 aircraft, operating 1,045 routes across 35 countries and 158 airports.

Aside from easyJet, Europe’s two largest airlines – Ryanair and Lufthansa – also have dedicated MRO facilities in Malta.
