A SPAR supermarket is set to open in Naxxar, replacing the former Scott’s outlet which recently has been handed back to its property owner as part of the chain’s broader downsizing strategy.

WhosWho.mt can confirm that the property, previously operated by Scott’s Supermarket, is now under the lease of Azzopardi Group – the parent company of SPAR Malta. Azzopardi Group, best known as a fisheries and tuna farming pioneer, also owns brands such as Miracle Foods and is involved in property projects like Fort Cambridge.

The group confirmed the development, stating that the Naxxar shop will reopen as part of the SPAR franchise.

This comes after Scott’s Supermarket Managing Director Mario Said clarified earlier this week to WhosWho.mt that the company had leased out its stores to Convenience – with the exception of its Żabbar branch, which remains under Scott’s management. The Naxxar outlet, however, was handed back to its property owner and is therefore not included in the leasing agreement.

SPAR Malta has been steadily expanding since launching on the island in 2018. It currently operates 12 stores across the country, with outlets in Ta’ Xbiex, Marsaxlokk, Marsascala, Valletta, Ħamrun, and two in the St Paul’s Bay/Buġibba area, among others. At launch, the brand had expressed plans to open 23 locations by 2025.
