Scott’s Supermarket, a long-standing player in Malta’s retail grocery sector, is significantly downsizing its operations, with all branches set to close – except for its Żabbar outlet.

WhosWho.mt reached out to Mario Said, Managing Director of Scott’s Supermarket, to confirm reports about the closures.

He clarified that the shops have not been sold but leased to Convenience for a 15-year period – five years fixed (di fermo) and 10 years optional (di rispetto), starting from this month.

The Naxxar store has been handed back to the property owner, and the Żabbar branch will continue to operate as usual and is not part of the closures.

When asked about the future of the employees, he explained that the leasing agreement includes the transfer of staff, while any remaining employees will continue working with Scott’s

This marks a major shift for the company, which began operations in 2002, opening its first supermarket in Naxxar. A year later, the business expanded with a central warehouse and outlet in Attard.

Between 2005 and 2008, Scott’s Ltd launched five additional supermarkets across the island, establishing itself as a recognisable brand in Malta’s grocery market. The company eventually acquired its Burmarrad outlet as its flagship store, later adding four more locations under its umbrella.

At its peak, Scott’s Supermarket operated branches in Attard, Naxxar, Santa Luċija, Żabbar, and Fleur-de-Lys.
