The restoration of St Thomas Tower in Marsascala and its sea battery has been entrusted to ReCoop, a cooperative that offers conservation, restoration, art-historical, monitoring and consultancy services to the private and public sector.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna – the Malta Heritage Trust, announced that its CEO and Chairman, Mario Farrugia, presented the keys to St. Thomas Tower to Paul Muscat, Managing Director at ReCoop, for works to begin immediately on site.

The project is expected to take around one and a half years to complete, with a total investment of around €2.5 million.

“When complete, the restored tower will serve as a brand-new museum dedicated to the history of corsairing and piracy in the Mediterranean against which it was built in 1614,” the Foundation said. “It will cover the subject since the earliest of times until present with a special emphasis on its golden age during the 16th and 17th centuries.”

This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, co-funded by the EU’s Regional Development fund, Maltese Government and Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.
