A 160-year-old townhouse in Rabat known as Howard House has been converted into a recently opened boutique-style luxury bed and breakfast. The property formerly served as Rabat’s central post office, with its interior now showcasing a private collection of original artworks by Maltese and international contemporary artists.
Howard House is named after Malta’s first Prime Minister, Joseph Howard, and now includes eight adult-only guest rooms equipped with high-end amenities, as well as a rooftop entertainment and relaxation area, a breakfast room and other catering facilities.
Following a five-year restoration and transformation project under the supervision of planning and heritage authorities, the property’s cultural and structural integrity remain intact.
Mariella Scerri, the luxury accommodation’s owner, said “This is not just about accommodation. Howard House represents a commitment to preserving Malta’s architectural identity – a labour of love to give back to the island I deeply care for.”
On Tuesday (yesterday), the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, visited Howard House where he met with some of the property’s first guests and commended the project for its strategic alignment with national objectives.
“Howard House is an example of how private investment can feasibly align with national priorities – preserving our architectural heritage while enriching our tourism offering,” Minister Borg said.
While reiterating the Government’s commitment to similar endeavours “that celebrate the country’s past while building a sustainable, high-quality future for Maltese tourism,” Minister Borg highlighted that the project preserves an important part of Rabat’s heritage and enhances Malta’s attractiveness as a tourist destination.
