As the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December, PwC Malta has shone a spotlight on a story that goes far beyond awareness campaigns – the lived experience of inclusion in the workplace.
In a feature shared on the firm’s social media channels, Matthew Camilleri, a Manager within PwC Malta’s Tax Department, opened up about his journey as a profoundly deaf professional navigating one of the most fast-paced and communication-heavy environments in the corporate world.
Mr Camilleri received his cochlear implant at the age of three, beginning what he describes as a long and determined path towards hearing and speech.
Entering the tax profession – a role defined by tight deadlines, client interactions, and continuous internal coordination – comes with its own pressures. Yet he explains that what made the difference at PwC Malta was not just accessibility, but genuine understanding.
“At PwC Malta, fast pace and constant communication can be very challenging, however, the difference made here is the support I received from my team from day one. They ensured that I was not just included but truly understood.”
“Inclusion isn’t just a buzzword, it means creating a space where everyone can find themselves, even when things are very difficult. For me, it helped me grow, contribute confidently, and most importantly feel that I belong here.”
PwC Malta described Matthew’s experience as an example of how meaningful support can empower individuals to thrive, noting that “his journey, supported by those around him, highlights the difference that inclusion can make.”
