Superintendent for Public Health Charmaine Gauci confirmed that the Health Authorities are currently working with the Malta Tourism Authority with a view to reopen the airport at a future date.

Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli made headlines on Thursday evening after announcing that the Government had always aimed to keep the airport shut till 15th June, and she also revealed that the Prime Minister will be announcing a date for the reopen of the airport at a future date.

She also said that the airport will be reopened once the Health Authorities give the go-ahead.

The Times of Malta also revealed, citing multiple sources, that the airport would be reopened by 15th July.

Asked about the timelines currently being discussed, Prof Gauci said:

“We are working with the MTA to identify situations where countries may carry a lesser risk of transmission, while also considering protocols for the airport to ensure safety, so that when it is the opportune time to re-open, we will be prepared.”
