The tug of war between the national airline, Air Malta, and the Union of Pilots, ALPA, continues with fresh demands, as the union is now calling for pilots to have an early retirement, by age 50, which could be accompanied by a handsome pension package of €50,000 a year.

The demands were made amid ongoing talks between both sides for weeks, which resulted in the Air Malta pilots refusing a pay cut of €1,200, which forced the national airline to make a large portion of its pilots redundant in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

As reported by MaltaToday, ALPA sent a notice to Government of legal action it will be taking against Air Malta, accusing its directors of failing to get “financial assistance in order to minimise the company’s financial hardship [and] considering alternative measures [for a] less restrictive effect on the workforce.”

In the same letter, the union is asking to “conduct meaningful and effective consultation” with the company directors about the €1,200 monthly salary the airline had originally offered, and asking for evidence of Air Malta’s claim that the same salary could safeguard the jobs of all employees.
