Peter Howitt, the well-known Hollywood movie set designer passed away on Wednesday at the age of 93.
First moving to Malta in the 70s after being involved in several internationally renowned movies, he went on to mentor several locals in the theatre industry.
He is a four-time Oscar nominee, having created the sets of classic films, such as the Indiana Jones films, Braveheart, Mission: Impossible, Superman and The Great Gatsby.
Locally, he contributed to Malta’s theatres by assisting in the productions of theatre company MADC and YADA Dance Company until recently.
Turning to social media, Director and Founder of ComedKnights and TAC Theatre, Wesley Ellul, expressed his heartbreak to hear “such an amazingly talented artist, designer and true lover and supporter of the arts” has died.
“Peter Howitt was such a kind, and caring soul who loved nothing more than making worlds of make believe come alive with his designs, passion and ideas.
“I had the pleasure of working and learning from this amazing gentleman on several occasions but none more memorable than when he kindly offered to help design the set for my directorial musical debut for #SpringAwakening.”
