Professor Kristian Zarb Adami has been appointed Chairperson of Malta’s National Commission for UNESCO, which works to advance UNESCO’s mission of promoting peace and security through international cooperation in education, science, and culture.

One of Malta’s most distinguished scientists, Prof. Zarb Adami is recognised for his contributions to the design of radio telescopes, notably through his role in the global Square Kilometre Array project to build the world’s largest radio telescope.

He is the founding director of the Institute for Space Sciences and Astronomy at the University of Malta and holds joint academic positions with the University of Oxford and the University of Catania.

Prof. Zarb Adami is also co-founder of a digital care company that uses artificial intelligence – originally developed for astronomy – to detect and monitor degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s at an early stage.

The new panel comprises six experts representing UNESCO’s three core areas – culture, education, and science – ensuring balanced and comprehensive representation.

Alongside Prof. Zarb Adami, members include Francis J. Sultana, Christopher Briffa, Mirana Agius Silvio, Francesco Debono, Dr Rachel Abela, and Dr Chris Barbara.

Luisana D’Amato will serve as Secretary-General, with Matthew Mallia as Board Secretary.

Minister for Lands, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici emphasised that the Commission will strengthen cooperation between governmental and non-governmental entities in the relevant fields.

"We will ensure the active participation of Maltese professionals in UNESCO initiatives, while working to promote their appointment to positions within the Organisation and collaborate in international projects with other UNESCO commissions and regional offices," said the Minister.

UNESCO’s statute calls on all Member States to establish a National Commission to act as a bridge between national institutions and the organisation, ensuring local perspectives are represented in programme development while also disseminating information on UNESCO’s activities.
