4.30pm: Updated with statement saying individuals have been identified.
A pair of tourists dined at Leyla Restaurant in St Julian’s on Sunday and left without paying their €150 bill.
In a post on social media on Monday (today) afternoon, the team at Leyla Restaurant shared that the individuals ate and drank, before running away. It warned other bars and restaurants, urging them to watch out.
Following this, WhosWho.mt reached out to the restaurant for comment, and Owner Joseph Fenech Soler said that the incident took place during the evening.
“They came when it was still light, sat outside, ordered quite a hefty meal, and were eating and re-ordering drinks,” he said.
One of the patrons then stood up and said that he will go buy some cigarettes, before the other one made a run for it.
The staff informed the management that the pair “had a lot to drink,” and that was possibly a reason why one of the patrons chose to stand up.
He remarked that the tourists said that they were from Sweden.
When asked how this has impacted the Lebanese restaurant, located at Spinola Street, Mr Fenech Soler stated that it does have an effect on income, especially since the “tourists that are coming are not good spenders.”
In the post, the restaurant’s management shared pictures of the two individuals, urging anyone that sees them to report them to the police.
Later on Monday afternoon, the restaurant posted that the individuals involved have been identified after being tracked on Facebook. Payment of the bill has since been effected.
"Therefore no further measures need to be taken against them. Thank you," the statement continued.
This follows a similar case from January, when a group of seven tourists dined at Siġġiewi restaurant Marilù’s, before leaving with an unpaid €135 bill.
