While governments across Europe have pledged to kick start the tourism sector, passengers from Malta travelling from the 1st of July will still not be covered by their travel insurance should they get the disease or, even, have to stay in quarantine, racking up additional expenses.

Both Gasan Mamo Insurance and Atlas Insurance have confirmed that anything related to COVID-19 is still not covered, despite some countries across the continent giving the green light to travel.

This means that should a passenger get the disease while away, any extra costs will have to be bourne by the traveller. Moreover, if on arrival to their destination, tourists and visitors are forced to go into quarantine, their insurance will not pay out for the financial hit.

The news comes as various countries open up and start welcoming guests. This has not been without difficulties and uncertainty. Indeed, over the past few days, in Greece, all 91 passengers on a flight from Qatar were forced to go into quarantine after 12 tested positive.

On Monday, Greece said it would cover the costs of accommodating guests who tested positive for the virus, with Cyprus also making similar plans, though no mention has been made about the additional expenses related to quarantine.

Malta’s tourism sector is also bound to bear the brunt of such risks imposed on travellers for insurances across Europe are also taking similar stances.
