Startups championing ocean regeneration and maritime innovation were in the spotlight at the Malta ClimAccelerator on 9th May, where three standout ventures were awarded for their contributions to the blue economy. Among the winners was Planetixx – a data-driven startup using satellite imagery and AI to transform how marine environments are monitored.
Founded by CEO James Doherty, Planetixx took home the ‘Hyper Growth’ award, tying with sustainable materials startup Algae Scope.
“The ocean has been treated like a giant bin”
Planetixx was born out of a sense of urgency – and opportunity.
“The ocean is our planet’s most critical natural resource – and yet, for decades, it has been treated like a giant bin,” Dr Doherty told WhosWho.mt. “Coming from backgrounds in space science and physics, we saw a clear synergy: Satellite data could help monitor and safeguard an environment as vast and dynamic as the ocean.”
Planetixx’s platform uses Earth observation data and artificial intelligence to provide decision-makers with real-time insights on marine health. From tracking algal blooms and marine debris to monitoring aquaculture zones and blue carbon, the startup’s software enables proactive, evidence-based action in an area long underserved by innovation.
Funding, focus, and the fight against distraction
Like many early-stage companies, Planetixx has had to navigate common startup challenges – not least of which is funding.
“It takes capital to access the right talent, data, and partnerships,” Dr Doherty said. “Runway is always a major preoccupation. But just as important is the ability to stay focused. There’s a lot of noise in the startup world – a constant stream of ‘Squirrel!’ moments, to borrow a reference from the movie Up. One of the greatest skills is knowing what to ignore, and staying laser-focused on the opportunities that really align with your mission.”
A Maltese opportunity
With the Malta ClimAccelerator spotlight now shining brightly on the company, Planetixx is setting its sights on local partnerships.
“We’re currently seeking data and pilot partners in Malta to develop geographically specific models and trial our technology in real-world environments,” Dr Doherty revealed. “Our goal is to integrate these tools into national monitoring systems – helping Malta unlock the full potential of satellite data to support a thriving blue economy in the Mediterranean.”
Organised with support from EIT Climate-KIC, the Malta ClimAccelerator programme aims to empower climate-focused startups through funding, mentoring, and global innovation networks. Winners gain access to equity investment opportunities of up to €1.5 million, as well as entry into the European semi-finals of the Startups World Cup.
The recognition of Planetixx – alongside Ogyre (Impact Category winner) and Algae Scope – reflects a growing global demand for scalable, tech-enabled solutions in ocean sustainability.
“For Planetixx, we’ve been building for scale from day one,” said Dr Doherty. “Winning the 'Hyper Growth' category, as judged by such an experienced panel, gives us fresh momentum and a clear signal that we’re on the right track.”
