A new McDonald’s outlet is set to open in the heart of Ħamrun, on the site of the former HSBC branch.
The property was acquired by Marsamxett Properties – a subsidiary of Hili Ventures – in late 2025 for around €1.65 million.
It subsequently obtained Planning Authority approval to change the property's use from a bank to a restaurant, with planning documents confirming it is earmarked to become a McDonald’s.
It is set to consist of a kitchen and serving area at ground level, a first-floor dining area, a storage and waste room in the basement, and offices on upper floors.
A report by iAS Architects said the proposed design respects the original modernist architectural language of the former bank and maintains visual harmony with the surrounding streetscape, while introducing subtle refinements.
The Ħamrun branch is set to become Malta’s 11th McDonald’s outlet, joining the existing restaurants in Għargħur, Valletta, St Julian’s, Bay Street, Buġibba, Rabat (Gozo), Birkirkara, Sliema, the Airport, and Mrieħel.
Besides Malta, Hili’s Premier Capital is also the developmental licensee for McDonald’s in Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania.
