Cugó Gran Vittoriosa, a new hotel located in the historic Cottonera region, is set to open to tourists in 2024.

After German company Qcoon Real Estate acquired the Palace of the Captains of the Galleys in Vittoriosa in 2016, the building has been renovated extensively. Over the coming months, the building’s interior will be completed, with the hotel, featuring 18 individually designed suites, poised to be fully operation by summer of 2024.

The hotel will be operated by IBB Hotel Collection, a subsidiary of Malta-based Von der Heyden Group, which also manages the Cugó Gran Macina Hotel and IBB Hotel Palazzo Bettina located in Senglea and Vittoriosa, respectively.

Commenting on the development, Qcoon Real Estate Country Manager of Malta Bastian Große Halbuer said that “2024 is the year”.

“The Cugó Gran Vittoriosa will open its doors in the historic Palace of the Captains of the Galleys. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world who will contribute to the revitalisation of the peninsula with the Three Cities and the Grand Harbour,” he added.

He remarked that Qcoon Real Estate carried out the renovation of the 18th century building over the past few years.

“With IBB Hotel Collection, we have found a very experienced hotel management company with an excellent local network. We are therefore convinced that the building will give Vittoriosa and its neighbouring towns a noticeable urban development impulse,” Mr Halbuer added.

Samuel Santos, CEO of IBB Hotel Collection, which also has hotels in Berlin (Germany) and Gdansk (Poland) among other locations, explained that the new hotel will complete the collection’s offer in two of the three Cottonera cities.

“We are delighted to enrich the Maltese hotel market and to be a great part in the further development of Birgu (Vittoriosa) with the new Cugó Gran Vittoriosa. The location of the boutique hotel is ideal for travellers who want to discover local life, the Maltese gastronomy and history, and feel at home,” he added.

Each of the 18 rooms in the hotel will be differently sized, containing unique features and an airy structure designed for high-end luxury guests. The property is described as one that is designed to be a “sustainable building, employing construction methods that promote energy efficiency”.
