John Farrugia, the founder of Neonglow and a pioneer of Malta’s neon signage industry, has passed away at the age of 95.

Known as “Johnie tan-Neonglow”, Mr Farrugia dedicated more than 70 years to neon and signage, with his work appearing on businesses and landmarks across Malta, Gozo and “further afar”, including the iconic Havana club sign in Paceville.

Announcing his passing, the company said that Mr Farrugia continued practising his craft until late in his life.

Mr Farrugia’s involvement in the industry dates back to the early years of commercial neon signage in Malta. 

Having been mentored by Italian craftsmen, Mr Farrugia went on to industrialise neon tubing locally. His work, which continued to involve a painstaking handmade process, established him as one of the pioneers of neon signage manufacturing in Malta.

Neonglow later amalgamated with competitor RTC Neon amid growing competition and price pressures, with the combined operation trading as RTC Neonglow.

Following financial difficulties at the company, Mr Farrugia purchased some of its equipment and, together with his son Emmanuel, established his own workshop. He subsequently founded Neonglow in 1975.

The business has since developed into a full-service signage company and is today in its third generation, providing sign design, fabrication, installation and maintenance services.

Mr Farrugia also passed his knowledge and skills on to subsequent generations of his family, allowing the craft and business he helped establish to continue after him.

“His legacy lives on through his family, his work and the final neon he ever made,” Neonglow said in announcing his passing.

The company’s office and workshop will remain closed until further notice.
