Popular Maltese eatery Mamma’s Sugar is set to go international with the launch of a new flagship restaurant in the Macedonian capital of Skopje, bringing a taste of Malta alongside it.
The new Mamma’s Sugar will span around 600 square metres and accommodate up to 200 diners.
Located at Kej 13-ti Noemvri by the Vardar river in the heart of Skopje, the restaurant is set to officially open its doors on 3rd October.
The expansion also represents something of a homecoming for Mamma’s Sugar founder Alen Osman, who is originally from North Macedonia.
Mr Osman opened the first Mamma’s Sugar outlet in Ta’ Xbiex in 2022, before expanding the concept to St Paul’s Bay and Victoria, Gozo. The Skopje opening will mark the brand’s first venture outside Malta.
Just as the Maltese Mamma’s Sugar’s includes a number of Macedonian dishes, so too will the Macedonian version include several traditional Maltese foods and beverages, including pastizzi, ftajjar, imqaret and Cisk, alongside its signature desserts, baked items, burgers and Mediterranean dishes.
It will also feature several references to Malta, including a Maltese flag on the exterior, a Maltese limestone inspired bar, and even a luzzu-themed salt and pepper holder.
“The project represents an important milestone for Mamma’s: a Maltese concept expanding internationally while preserving the identity and character on which the brand was built,” Mr Osman said.
