MEP Miriam Dalli has been appointed to the newly-established Special Committee on Beating Cancer.
Dr Dalli, who is Vice President of the Socialists and Democrats for the European Green Deal in the European Parliament, was selected by her political group to be a full member of this specialised committee.
Commenting on her appointment, Dr Dalli expressed “since my first year in the European Parliament, I’ve focused on the environment and health as I believe both areas work hand-in-hand. And as a mother, it is crucial for me to give my contribution in this area, to leave a positive impact for the next generations.”
Dr Dalli added that a lot of work still needs to be done to discover adequate cancer treatments, especially for children.
“The death of each child from cancer makes me so sad but also very angry, because since 2006, only 9 cancer treatments for children have been approved, compared to the 150 cancer treatments approved for adults,” she explains. “We need to discuss this with greater urgency and need to support research and investment in the fight against cancer, especially in children.”
The special committee was one of a number of new committees established during the EP’s June plenary session, including a subcommittee on taxation, three special committees – on cancer, artificial intelligence and foreign interference, and a committee of inquiry on animal transport.
