The founder of Mamma’s Sugar Limited, an award-winning local desserts business, shared today the difficult news that his application for Maltese citizenship by naturalisation has been refused, a decision communicated in a single sentence.

“I never imagined that, after so many years of dedication, the answer would still be no,” Alen Osman shared to Facebook.

Having arrived in Malta nine years ago Alen Osman has since built a successful business through Mamma’s Sugar, a small kitchen project flourished into a brand that showcases the warmth, creativity and traditions of Malta.

Our sweets have received recognition not just for their taste, but for their story the story of a small Maltese company built on love, tradition, family and inclusion,” he shared.

Mamma’s Sugar prides itself on inclusivity, with 39 per cent of its team comprised of people with disabilities, Mr Osman stated.

Beyond this, the company emphasises social impact, supporting local suppliers and investing in the community, qualities the founder sees as embodying the true spirit of being Maltese: solidarity, humanity, and respect.

"So yes – this decision to refuse my citizenship hurts deeply,” he shared.

“It feels unjust. I have lived here honestly, paid my taxes, created jobs, and represented Malta with pride. I believed that this country would see the value of my contribution – not only in numbers, but in heart.”

Despite the setback, the entrepreneur’s resolve remains steadfast.

I didn’t just build a company here. I built a life, a purpose, and a community.

Still, I refuse to let disappointment turn into bitterness. My respect for Malta, its people, and its spirit remains unshaken. I will continue to grow Mamma’s Sugar, to support inclusivity, to innovate, and to represent Malta with pride wherever I go,” he continued.

For so many people with stories similar to Mr Osman's, this is a powerful reminder that citizenship is more than legal documentation. It is defined by love, dedication, and the contributions one makes to the society they call home.

As he concludes, no matter what any official letter says in my heart, I am already Maltese. Not by birth, but by love, by work, and by contribution.
