Maltese MEP Peter Agius has highlighted the opportunities available to local artisans through the European Union’s new framework for Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products (CIGIs), during an information session bringing together Maltese craftspeople and European officials.

The session was organised by Dr Agius and attended by representatives of the European Commission, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Maltese Crafts Foundation. It focused on the protection available to traditional crafts and the financial support that eligible businesses can access through European schemes.

The EU framework aims to protect craft and industrial products whose reputation, quality or characteristics are linked to their geographical origin.

During the session, Elton Micallef of the Maltese Crafts Foundation presented the work being undertaken to secure European recognition for the traditional Maltese Lira Clock, which is already at an advanced stage in the process. Several craftspeople specialising in Lira Clock making are involved in the initiative, which has also received financial assistance from EUIPO.

Adria Lopez, representing the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, explained the geographical indication framework and the opportunities it offers to European artisans and manufacturers.

The session also addressed the importance of raising awareness among Maltese artisans about the European protection mechanisms and financial assistance available to them.

Dr Agius said Maltese craftsmanship deserved recognition and protection beyond the country’s shores, highlighting the importance of making European support mechanisms accessible to local producers.

The initiative forms part of efforts to inform Maltese businesses about EU opportunities for protecting traditional products and securing support for their applications.

The session concluded with a call for greater awareness of the framework and for more artisans and producers to explore the protection and financial assistance available at national and European level.
