Next week, Malta will host the inaugural School Esports World Championship, bringing together international schools and students for a three-day event centred on education and competitive gaming.
The championship will take place from Wednesday, 9th October to Friday, 11th October, organised by DAIGON Esports in collaboration with PLAYCON, with support from GamingMalta.
While esports has long been associated with professional gaming and entertainment, schools worldwide are increasingly recognising its value as an educational tool.
Integrating esports into the classroom is seen as a way to develop teamwork, problem-solving and digital literacy skills, qualities that extend well beyond the game itself.
The competition in Malta reflects this growing global trend, with international education organisations backing the initiative.
Partners include the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), the Education Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS), the British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) and the Independent Schools Association (ISA).
Students will compete in two titles:
- Minecraft – known for creativity and problem-solving.
- Rocket League – combining teamwork, strategy, and reflexes.
The event adds a new dimension to Malta’s role in the international esports space.
Beyond competition, it highlights how gaming is being reframed as part of education, with the island hosting a unique convergence of schools, students and digital innovation.
