Joseph Sammut, the composer who laid the foundations for what is now the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), has passed away at the age of 97.

The announcement was first made on Wednesday (today) by Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici, who expressed gratitude to Maestro Sammut for his work both towards the orchestra and the rest of Malta’s music sector.

In a separate post, the MPO thanked Maestro Sammut for his years of commitment to the orchestra, adding that “his passion for music, dedication to excellence, and unwavering commitment to the MPO will forever be remembered and cherished.”

Born back in 1926, he commenced his musical studies from his father, Vincenzo Sammut, who was a bassoonist at the Royal Opera House. While he went on to become a bassoonist, like his father, eventually he delved into conducting and composing, and never looked back.

He was the conductor of the Orchestra of the Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy for 16 years. This came to an end when the orchestra was disbanded in 1968.

However, he then formed the Manoel Theatre Orchestra, and remained Chief Conductor up until 1993. This orchestra was then developed into the National Symphony Orchestra, and then the MPO.

“Under Maestro Sammut’s guidance, the MPO reached new heights, enchanting audiences with captivating performances that touched the soul. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike,” the MPO continued.

Maestro Sammut’s long and distinguished music career also includes over 35 years as the master of Valletta’s La Valette Philharmonic Society.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Maestro Sammut’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his music live on in our hearts forever,” the MPO’s statement concluded.
