Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, has formally presented the Letters of Appointment to David Muscat, confirming his role as Malta’s Representative to the State of Palestine.
Mr Muscat succeeds Franklin J. Aquilina, who was recently appointed as Malta’s Ambassador to Libya. His appointment coincided with Malta’s official recognition of the State of Palestine, announced by Prime Minister Robert Abela during the United Nations Assembly in New York on Monday (yesterday).
The presentation ceremony was held at San Anton Palace, where President Spiteri Debono described Malta’s recognition of Palestinian statehood as a “historic step” taken alongside other nations. She expressed hope that the move would contribute to advancing prospects for lasting peace in the Middle East.
The President noted that this milestone should also be seen as an opportunity to strengthen relations between Malta and the State of Palestine, noting that constructive dialogue and cooperation will be essential moving forward.
