Exciting news for Malta’s food community, as the Malta Food Agency joins forces with the Malta Tourism Authority and Heritage Malta to host Food on the Edge Malta. The internationally renowned food symposium will bring together leading voices from the culinary world, offering a platform for discussion, collaboration and new ideas around Malta’s food scene.
The event reflects the strong collaboration that has developed in recent years between the Malta Food Agency, the Malta Tourism Authority, and Heritage Malta, contributing directly towards creating a more connected ecosystem in which food is increasingly recognised as part of Malta's wider cultural and tourism identity.
"The collaboration between the Malta Food Agency, the Malta Tourism Authority, and Heritage Malta has helped integrate food into different sectors and experiences, ranging from tourism and heritage initiatives to cultural programming and destination branding. This broader approach has contributed towards giving Maltese gastronomy stronger cultural relevance and international visibility," says Justin John Camilleri, Chief Business Development Officer, at Malta Food Agency.
"Over recent years, increased collaboration between entities operating across the food, tourism, and heritage sectors has helped elevate the visibility of Maltese and Gozitan products, culinary traditions, and local producers. Hosting an internationally respected platform such as Food on the Edge reflects Malta's growing relevance within wider international discussions surrounding gastronomy, sustainability, heritage, and authentic visitor experiences."
This collaborative approach has also been reflected through initiatives showcased during Berlin Green Week, as well as the Wine Appreciation Evening organised for Malta's Members of Parliament and members of the foreign diplomatic corps in Malta, held in the Parliament of Malta, both of which highlighted the growing role of Maltese food and wine within cultural diplomacy, tourism positioning, and international engagement.
The event is being considered an achievement of long-term cross-sectorial collaboration. "The collective efforts of entities and stakeholders across multiple sectors have helped position gastronomy beyond the traditional hospitality context, increasingly recognising food as an important cultural, historical, and tourism asset," Mr Camilleri observes.
"We are naturally ecstatic to play such an important role in the organisation of this prestigious event," Mr Camilleri claims excitedly. "The Malta Food Agency is contributing within this wider collaborative effort, through its work with producers, artisans, industry stakeholders, and public entities. Over the years, the Agency has supported initiatives aimed at increasing visibility for local products and strengthening appreciation for Maltese and Gozitan food culture both locally and internationally, an effort which is expected to prominently come into focus during this symposium," he continues.
It is against this backdrop of deepening collaboration that Food on the Edge Malta 2026 takes shape. Originally founded in Ireland, Food on the Edge brings chefs, food producers, hospitality leaders, writers, and industry stakeholders under one roof, to discuss the future of food, gastronomy, sustainability, culture, and hospitality. Unlike traditional food festivals, the platform focuses on wider conversations surrounding food systems, identity, local production, innovation, and the role of food within society and tourism. The 2026 edition will mark the first time the symposium is hosted outside Ireland, with Malta selected as the next destination for the event.
"Food on the Edge Malta 2026 represents an important opportunity for Malta to continue strengthening the conversation around food, culture, tourism, and identity," Mr Camilleri says. "Food on the Edge Malta 2026 is an important milestone in the continued evolution and international recognition of Malta's food sector. In fact, it goes beyond the simple international gastronomy event taking place locally. It is testament to Malta developing a stronger culinary identity and is increasingly participating in broader international discussions surrounding food, sustainability, heritage, tourism, and gastronomy."
Food on the Edge Malta is being brought to Malta by the Malta Tourism Authority. It is a unique opportunity to continue strengthening Malta's positioning as a Mediterranean destination where gastronomy, heritage, authenticity, and visitor experience intersect.
However, the stars of the show during the symposium are expected to remain the local producers, artisans, and culinary practitioners on whom a bright light will shine throughout the event.
"Food on the Edge Malta 2026 is a prestigious platform through which Maltese producers and food businesses can showcase the quality, authenticity, and diversity of local products to an influential international audience, while also creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, and long-term sector growth."
Ultimately it is a bold confirmation of Malta's growing relevance within wider Mediterranean and European conversations surrounding food, sustainability, locality, heritage, and the future of gastronomy.
"Hosting a respected international platform such as Food on the Edge reinforces Malta's emergence as a destination where food forms part of a broader cultural and visitor experience," Mr Camilleri concludes.
