Lufthansa Technik COO Harald Gloy has described the expansion of the company’s operations in Malta as a “major milestone” in its corporate strategy.

“Lufthansa Technik Malta will be the first location worldwide where Lufthansa Technik will carry out work on the 787 Dreamliner as a Boeing-licensed Service Centre for cabin modifications. This will not only create new options for our customers, but also highly qualified jobs in Malta,” he said, speaking at an event to mark the major investment in Malta’s aviation sector.

The €22 million project will see the construction of a new hangar for wide-body aircraft maintenance, adjacent to Lufthansa Technik’s existing facilities in Luqa.

The investment is being supported by the Maltese Government through Malta Enterprise, the country’s economic development agency, and INDIS, which manages Malta’s industrial zones.

The project will also include the construction of a new parking zone accommodating up to three aircraft.

The company offers maintenance services for all Airbus aircraft except the A380, and also for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Maria Cilia, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Technik Malta, said: “Today marks a historic moment for Lufthansa Technik Malta as we embark on a transformative journey that will shape the future of our company. This significant project is more than just an investment; it is a testament to our commitment to growth, innovation, and excellence in aviation maintenance.”

She continued: “Together with my 570 colleagues here in Malta, I take immense pride in seeing our site expand into new frontiers. The launch of our 787 Dreamliner cabin modification projects represents an exciting evolution for our operations, building on our proven expertise in base maintenance for this aircraft type.

“As CEO, an engineer, and a proud Maltese, I see this expansion as an opportunity that extends beyond our company. It strengthens Lufthansa Technik Malta, creates opportunities for our employees, enhances the experience for our customers, and reinforces Malta’s position as a thriving aviation hub. This is not just about today – it is about shaping the future of aviation in Malta.”

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Robert Abela said the project will continue to place Malta at the forefront of the global Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry.

He said that the aviation industry contributes €600 million to Malta’s economy while employing thousands of people.

“If we had to only focus on the MRO niche – employment grew to 1,224 full-time equivalent roles in 2025 – an increase of 14 per cent from the previous year.”

The latest investment is expected to generate a further 70 high-skilled jobs.

“I want to stress that our aim in job creation is quality over quantity,” said the Prime Minister, reiterating the Government’s commitment to prepare Maltese students so that they can get involved in these industries.

“We have pushed for collaboration between MCAST and Malta Enterprise with the ‘Choose Aviation’ campaign encouraging students to explore careers in this industry as we see more international companies establishing a base in Malta.”

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said the €22 million investment “reinforces Malta’s position as a centre of excellence in the aviation sector. Through strategic planning, innovation, and sustained investment, we are shaping an aviation industry that is future-ready, highly competitive, and capable of delivering world-class services.”

Minister Schembri added that the aviation sector will be one of the main pillars of growth in Malta Vision 2050, the economic vision currently being formulated in consultation with economic and social partners.

“As a Government we will continue investing in the infrastructure, talent, and technology necessary to keep our aviation industry soaring to greater heights,” he said.
