Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg has announced that PN MP Bernard Grech will be nominated for the role of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives during the first sitting of Malta’s 15th Parliament on Saturday (tomorrow).
The election of the Deputy Speaker is expected to take place after the House votes on the appointment of Carmelo Abela as Speaker and before Members of Parliament take the oath of office.
The PN also announced the appointment of MPs Toni Bezzina and Annabelle Cilia as Assistant Whips of the Nationalist Parliamentary Group. They will assist Whip Ivan Castillo in coordinating the party’s parliamentary work.
The appointments follow a commitment made by Alex Borg during the first meeting of the PN Parliamentary Group after the general election.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Robert Abela had announced that he is nominating Labour Party veteran Carmelo Abela as Speaker of the House. Carmelo Abela, who was first elected to Parliament in 1996, previously served as Deputy Speaker for more than seven years and has held several ministerial portfolios throughout his political career.
Parliament will officially open on Saturday following a Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral and the State Opening ceremony.
