Benny Borg Bonello, President of the Consumers’ Association for many years, passed away last week at the age of 76.
The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) remembered Mr Borg Bonello as “a stalwart in consumer advocacy” whose legacy “is one of integrity, dedication and an unwavering commitment to the Maltese consumer.”
The authority said he was “unwavering in his commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair market practices.”
It continued: “Throughout his tenure, Mr Borg Bonello was a vigilant guardian against unjust practices that could harm consumers. His dedication ensured that consumer interests remained at the forefront of economic discussions.”
He was laid to rest on Tuesday (yesterday).
Labour Party portal One.com.mt also paid its respects, noting that he was active in the party, especially between 1996 and 2003.
Meanwhile, former trade unionist Jeremy J. Camilleri described Mr Borg Bonello as a “genuine trade unionist and socialist,” and as a man of principle.
Mr Camilleri said Mr Borg Bonello was a man who measured his words carefully, and was of help to many.
Chev. Prof. Renald Blundell, who also served as President of the Consumers' Association, thanked the deceased for his "unwavering support" and for introducing him to consumer advocacy.
The Consumers' Association closed its doors in 2024, donating the remainder of its funds to the University of Malta to contribute towards research related to consumers.
