The supermarket chain Lidl has completed the acquisition of the former General Soft Drinks (GSD) bottling plant, also known as the Coca-Cola factory, for €12.75 million.

Mizzi Organisation, the parent company of GSD and Mizzi Estates Ltd, the owner of the site, announced the completion of the transaction through a company update posted to the Malta Stock Exchange.

The signing of the final deed of sale comes after Lidl obtained planning approval to build the new supermarket in September.

The new development will include 122 parking spaces, and will retain a singular small block of four apartments fronting Alexandra Street.

The permit supersedes a previously approved project consisting of three showroom sand 150 apartments.

The bottling plant has lain abandoned since GSD moved to larger premises in Marsa in 2008.
