Kurt Farrugia is expected to take on the top position at Transport Malta in the coming days, Times of Malta revealed on Friday.
He is currently CEO at Malta Enterprise, the country’s economic development agency, which means discussions are ongoing as to who will take over this position.
Mr Farrugia has been CEO of Malta Enterprise since 2019 and was a central figure in the Labour Party under the leadership of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
He is credited as having been an integral figure in Labour’s 2017, 2022 and 2024 electoral campaigns. He was previously a top aide in the Muscat administration and held the role of Head of Government Communications.
Transport Malta’s former CEO, Mark Mallia, vacated the position after being named Head of Government Secretariat under the current Robert Abela administration.
As an agency, Transport Malta has been in the hot seat over the years due to its status as regulator of all modes of transport in Malta. The agency oversees land, aviation and maritime transportation – all three equally vital to the functioning of the country as an island nation.
The authority’s scope is to promote and develop the transport sector in Malta by means of proper regulation and by promotion and development of related services, businesses and other interests both locally and internationally. It is consistently criticised for mismanagement, as the nation’s traffic woes continue to worsen.
